We can’t think of a better way to mark our first designer interview of the year than a chat with someone who’s celebrating a milestone of her own. This March, Top Level designer Citlalli Perez Peña (aka CherryPopDesign) will have spent a whopping 15 years on the platform! She joined 99d way back in 2009—only a year after we launched—and has since built a reputation as being a warm, responsive communicator and a whizz with hand-drawn signatures. 

So, it’s well past time we had a chat with Citlalli (or Cit for short) about her pivot from fashion, her soft, feminine design style, and what she’s learned as a veteran of the 99d community.

Who’s the creative mind behind CherryPopDesign? Tell us a bit about yourself!

I´m Citlalli (or Cit for short) from Guadalajara, México. I’m a stay-at-home mom of two trying to work while taking care of my kids.

What’s it like where you live?

I live in the town where tequila and mariachis were born. Guadalajara is the second largest city in México. It has some of the nicest weather in the country and beautiful historic downtown buildings.

Your parents both worked in pediatric medicine, so how did you come to be a graphic designer? Were you always creative?

When I was around 12, I decided I wanted to be a fashion designer. I used to spend my days drawing my own clothing designs. They were awful! But drawing was always a skill I had growing up. 

When I left high school, I didn’t know what else to do other than drawing, and to be honest I wasn’t ready to be an adult. I started studying fashion design because I thought it was easy to make a living out of it. It was more of a dream that came from fashion magazines than a realistic idea!

Why did you end up making the switch to graphic design?
