Following heartbreak for France and Ireland, England remain the only northern hemisphere side to have lifted the William Webb Ellis trophy – but that could all change at the next men’s Rugby World Cup.

Both hosts France and Ireland exited in the quarter-finals, while England finished third after losing to South Africa in the semi-finals before beating Argentina in the bronze-medal match.

So what next? Of course, there is another Six Nations on the horizon, a chance to restore order in Europe, while there is a new rugby calendar coming in 2026 – a shake-up that will transform summer and autumn internationals.

But that World Cup quarter-final curse for the Irish? Well, it stings, a feeling they know all too well, and one that’s lasting for another four years at least.

When is the next Rugby World Cup?

The next men’s Rugby World Cup will take place between 1 October and 13 November in 2027.

It will be the third time Australia hosts the tournament. They were co-hosts of the very first edition along with New Zealand in 1987. Australia then hosted in 2003, the year of England’s first and only triumph to date.

The venues are yet to be finalised, but there could be at least 10 stadia used throughout the tournament.

The 2003 World Cup was held across 11 venues, with Stadium Australia in Sydney staging the semi-finals, bronze-medal match and final.

More teams and a new format

In October 2023 it was confirmed that the next Rugby World Cup would feature 24 teams for the first time in its history.
