Thousands of people have signed a petition calling for Julia Hartley-Brewer to step down from her position at TalkTV over her “dismissive” comments during a heated debate with Palestinian MP Dr Mustafa Barghout.

She received a total of 15,536 Ofcom complaints following the interview which aired on January 3. The watchdog published its findings on Wednesday morning.

The pair were talking about a senior Hamas deputy leader being killed in a drone strike in Israel when Julia began yelling over her guest.

In one part of the interview, the broadcaster fumed: “For the love of God, let me finish a sentence, man.

“Maybe you’re not used to women talking, I don’t know but I’d like to finish a sentence, sir.”

The exchange angered viewers at home, with many branding Julia “rude” and “unprofessional” for how she dealt with the interview.

One viewer shared on X, formerly known as Twitter: “She’s very rude. She should be sacked. Shame on TalkTV if she stays.”

A second added: “What a disgusting, disrespectful interview from @JuliaHB1!! Have you ever known the rules of having guest @TalkTV shame on journalism to have this character on screen!” (sic)

A petition calling for the journalist to be sacked has fetched almost 8,000 signatures. The change.org petition was set up five days ago.

The organiser, Nancy Anderson, explained on the website: “We, the undersigned, express our deep concern and disappointment regarding the recent interview conducted by Julia Hartley-Brewer with Palestinian MP Mustafa Barghouti on TalkTV.”

She added: “During the interview, Julia Hartley-Brewer displayed visible anger and repeatedly interrupted Mr Barghouti, preventing him from expressing his views fully.

“Her dismissive comments, particularly insinuating that Mr Barghouti might not be accustomed to women talking, were not only unprofessional but also raised concerns about sexism and racism.”
