Romesh Ranganathan fuming over ‘abomination’ in Takeshi’s Castle reboot

If a fry-up isn’t quite nursing your hangovers these days then you’re in luck as the ultimate comfort television, Takeshi’s Castle, is making a comeback.

Who’d have thought that watching dozens of players being blasted by water guns and falling off slides in a series of wacky challenges would become such essential viewing… but here we are.

A cult hit, Takeshi’s Castle’s origins date all the way back to 1986 when it first aired in Japan before hitting UK screens for a glorious period in the early noughties, narrated by the inimitable Craig Charles and later Dick and Dom.

Mercifully, the TV gods haven’t tampered with the classic show’s format for the reboot bar one notable difference: this time around it’s comedians and friends Romesh Ranganathan, 45, and Tom Davis, 44, who will be wincing along as the contestants take numerous tumbles.

But Romesh isn’t best pleased by this. In fact, he’s positively fuming producers didn’t seize the opportunity to iron out, what is in his mind, a gaping flaw, as he explained to Metro.co.uk ahead of Takeshi’s Castle release.

Not mincing his words, Romesh hit out at the Fighting Spirit Award, which allows knocked-out players to have another go on the course, slamming it as an ‘abomination.’

But Tom, who also spoke to Metro.co.uk, vehemently disagreed: ‘I think It is one of the best parts of the game because it’s like, ”Oh my god they failed but now they’ve succeeded?”’

Jumping in, Romesh argued: ‘No, they haven’t succeeded. They have failed but they just…
