Millions of people are expected to take part in Coronation Big Lunch events across the UK this weekend as the country celebrates King Charles’ ascension to the throne.
The King and his wife Camilla will be crowned during a 2,000-strong service at Westminster Abbey on Saturday morning, before they start the coronation procession to Buckingham Palace. They are then expected to take part in the balcony salute alongside other Royal Family members.
On Sunday, people are invited to gather for a Coronation Big Lunch overseen and organised by the Big Lunch team at the Eden Project.
Camilla, the Queen Consort, has been patron of the Big Lunch since 2013.
What is the Coronation Big Lunch?
The palace says thousands of events are expected to take place in streets, gardens and parks in every corner of the UK. Coronation Big Lunch wants people to hold street parties, not only in celebration, but to bring together communities and reduce loneliness.
“A momentous occasion such as the coronation of Their Majesties King Charles and The Queen Consort is a fantastic reason to gather your community, plate up some food and get to know one another a little better,” says Lindsey Brummitt, programme director at the Eden Project.
“The positive impact of getting together with our communities at events like the Coronation Big Lunch lasts far beyond the weekend celebrations – our annual research shows that people feel less lonely, make new friends and are more likely to volunteer where they live as a result.”
Where are Big Lunch events being held?
Ms Brummitt said they were “expecting millions of people at tens of thousands of events” across the nation over the three-day weekend, which includes bank holiday Monday, 8 May.
“It’s going to be a brilliant celebration – a chance to be part of history. There is still plenty of time to take part, so we’re encouraging people not to miss out.”
