The Scott County Chess Club recently made its debut on the internet with a new website and will be hosting its third tournament in early November.

The 2nd annual Roosevelt Chess Classic is set for November 5 at Alfreda-Harris Lodge at Roosevelt State Park in Morton. This will be a successor to the first tournament held last November which attracted 46 players from Mississippi and three other states.

Chris Baker, founder and coordinator of the club, said registrations have been flowing in as the event draws near.

“We are excited to be able to continue what I believe can strengthen into a tradition of hosting chess tournaments in Scott County,” Baker said. “Combining players’ interest in the game with the natural beauty of one of our best state parks right here at home is a win-win for everyone.”

The tournament will start at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 5 p.m. It will include four rounds of games where players are grouped into three sections according to their U.S. Chess Federation rating. Prizes will include trophies, medals, and cash which is funded through donations. There will be competition for individuals and teams.

Baker said local business support has remained strong as donations are again making this tournament possible and allowing the club to do more each year in promoting chess.

Players must be members of the U.S. Chess Federation and may register for $30 until Oct. 29 after which the fee increases to $40. Spectators are welcome to visit and view the tournament at no charge.
